El Castro de Valtuille Mencia 2019

''Nicely concentrated and energetic on the palate, offering subtle red and dark berry. lingering florality." 91 Points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media

Hi Folks,  In recent years the Northern Spanish varietal Mencia has quickly become a main staple at many fine establishment in Australia. if you haven't yet tried one or would like to be reacquainted than your timing is perfect!  On show today we have the 2019 El Castro de Valtuille from Bierzo, (Castilla y Leon) produced by one of the most acclaimed winemakers in Europe; Raul Perez.  Born and raised in Bierzo, Raul Perez's delicious and vibrant Mencia features fresh mineral-tinged redcurrant and cherry scents with very good clarity and a subtle floral overtone.  Tangy, focused and pure on the palate, offering intense flavors of cherry, blackcurrant and red berry. It shows a light touch that's quite pinot-like, along with a hint of smokiness that carries through a long, mineral-driven finish.  If this wine were to be tasted blind, then it would be full of surprises, revealing a host of nuances that result in the creation of a very fine Mencia. I will leave you with encouraging words of wisdom from one of the main protagonist's on all things Spanish wine Luis Gutierrez of the Wine Advocate Magazine who spoke in glowing terms about this wine. “The 2019 is perfectly relaxed, aromatic and open, a preview of what the 2019s are going to be like, a very good vintage.

''Cherry and dark berry aromas show very good clarity and take on floral and spice nuances with air. Nicely concentrated and energetic on the palate, offering subtle red and dark berry and bitter cherry flavors and hints of licorice and cracked pepper. Shows firm, spicy thrust on the persistent finish, which features youthfully chewy tannins and lingering florality." 91 Points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media
