''This estate turned out a brilliant 2015 Rioja Crianza. Incredibly elegant. It’s a complete, balanced, seamless 2015 that does everything right. It’s great today yet should cruise for a decade in good cellars.'' 92 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
Like you, we love Tempranillo from Spain's Legendary Rioja wine region; therefore when we get access to a Rioja Tempranilllo Crianza with a serious reputation in Spain and from one of the most sought after vintages in years ''2015' it makes us even more excited than normal!
The particular Tempranillo that has grabbed our attention today comes from Bodegas Luis Cañas which is a Fourth generation family run winery in Rioja. Their 2015 Crianza Tempranillo is aged for over 12 months in French and American oak barrels; its packed with fruit and wrapped in a silky, oak laced layer of flavour that is almost uniquely Rioja. On the palate, the wine is smooth and lush with sweet tannins, ripe red and blue fruits, spice and savoury nuances.
Its not just us, who are impressed by the 2015 edition of this wine, its been getting a lot of attention from Spanish wine experts Luis Gutierrez from Wine Advocate, Rioja writer Tim Atkin, Jeb Dunnuck, Natalie MacLean and Vinous Media's Jay Raynolds who have all gone into great depth below about their thought's on the 2015 vintage.
"This estate turned out a brilliant 2015 Rioja Crianza, which is 95% Tempranillo and 5% Grenache that spent a year in a mix of French and American oak followed by a year in bottle. Medium to full-bodied, pure, and incredibly elegant, it has a terrific perfume of ripe cherries, cedarwood, and spice. It’s a complete, balanced, seamless 2015 that does everything right. It’s great today yet should cruise for a decade in good cellars." 92 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
"A voluptuously layered, full-bodied Spanish red wine made from Tempranillo grapes. Attractive aromas of dark fruit, cigar box, tanned leather and dried tobacco leaves." 92 Points, Natalie MacLean
"The young and creamy 2015 Crianza is mostly Tempranillo with 5% Garnacha, matured in French and American oak barrels for 12 to 14 months. It's ripe with moderate acidity and aromas intermixed with cherries and vanilla. The palate is soft with juicy fruit and lush tannins. A crowd-pleaser and a great vintage.'' 91 Points, Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate Magazine
''Deep, lurid ruby. Displays expansive, oak-spiced red/blue fruits, spice, vanilla and a sexy floral quality on the deeply perfumed nose. In a fruit-forward, seductive style, showing no rough edges and very good clarity to its sweet boysenberry and cherry flavours. The floral note comes back strong on a long, supple finish that betrays just a hint of fine-grained tannins.'' 91 Points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media
"Juan Luis Cañas sources the Tempranillo and 5% Garnacha grapes that go into this Crianza from a range of villages on the north bank of the River Ebro. Balanced, modern and appealing, with a well-judged combination of French and American oak and bright red berry fruit.'' 91 Points, Tim Atkin, Special Rioja Report, 2019
