Bodegas Urbina Seleccion Rioja Tempranillo 2000

''A coming of age Rioja. Intriguing history in a bottle. '' James Suckling: This is something you won't see an Australian producer do - release a 21 year old Red, from their cellar, drinking beautifully, to the Vinous world.

Hi Folks, This is something you won't see an Australian producer do - release a 21 year old Red, from their cellar, drinking beautifully, to the Vinous world. But Bodegas Urbina a 4th generation family owned winery from Spain has just done that! Urbina make those hard to find classically styled Rioja's from their own vines with no half-measures taken by them in regards to how they they look after their vineyard. They do hand harvesting; ensure pesticides and weed killers are avoided and the end result is a wonderfully well-made and charming Tempranillo!

Once you try you it, you won't imagine its more than 2 decades old...Medium bodied, similar to those classically aged Bordeaux. Concentrated and dark on the nose with berries, damsons, and figs, while on the palate there are notes of rich fruit and savouriness. Soft tannins, that only comes with age. And you wanna know something else? Its not going to set you back $75, or even $60, nope we have this available today for just $55... (The Best price in Australia!)

(Yes, you can buy current vintage releases for Rioja's at that price, but definitely not ones that have 20+ years of maturity!!)

I will leave you in good hands with a brief reflection from three seasoned wine writers Josh Raynolds, James Suckling and Bruce Sanderson of Wine Spectator Magazine who've certainly tasted more than their fair-share of matured Rioja's over the years!

''Dried cherry, candied rose, tobacco and a hint of fruitcake on the nose. Smooth and pliant in the mouth, offering appealingly sweet cherry pie, red currant and vanilla flavours that show no rough edges. Fully mature but still delivers good energy. The very long finish echoes the tobacco and vanilla notes.'' 92 Points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media

"A coming of age Rioja with cedar, dried cherries, and leather. Medium-bodied and spicy with drying tannins, with the oak and ripeness not overdone. Intriguing history in a bottle." James Suckling

"This has evolved into a well-built richness, still holding some floral notes in its black fruit. It has the soft ripeness of the 2000 vintage.'' Bruce Sanderson, Wine & Spirits Magazine
