Argentina might be the world’s biggest producer of malbec, but the grape’s historic heartland is Cahors, south-west France and this is where the best malbec is grown.

Many of the Argentina examples of the variety are produced to drink young, but aged Malbec is fantastic and this is where Cahors really excels. Of course few have the patience to wait for a wine to mature but don’t worry – we’ve done the work for you and have found a quality aged example.

Château La Reyne’s “Le Préstige” 2016 is just starting to enter it's optimal drinking window. The team at Gourmet Traveller Wine Guide recently tasted 27 examples from France and rated this wine as one of the best. Here's what they had to say:

"Fifth-generation winemaker Johan Vidal is behind the wines of Château La Reyne. Fruits of the forest, bramble and black cherry aromas lead to a medium-bodied palate with fine, grainy tannins, subtle acidity and a long finish."

If you enjoy Malbec and you want to know where the world-wide craze for this variety began, well look to Cahors and consider this.
