“From a single vineyard in Quinta dos Murcas. A powerful, structured expression. It has black fruits, dark tannins, subtle layers of wood aging and great concentration. Dark and richly fruited.” 94 Points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast Magazine
Hi Folks, The Douro Valley is the Crème de la crème for Portugal's most striking and age-worthy Red wines. One of the most revered winery's in all of the Douro Valley for this particular style comes from Esporão which has a history dating back to 1267! A lot of time has passed since their formation, but one things stands true they know how to make a seriously good Douro Valley Red! And it doesn't get much better than their 2011 version of the Quinta dos Murças Assobio Tinto. Before I dive in about the intricacies involved in this Douro Red, I firstly have to describe the vintage. 2011 unlike any other vintage in Europe is at its greatest in Portugal and especially the Douro Valley. This isn't one of those generic years when it had slightly better conditions than previous vintage or is warmer etc; no this is categorically the greatest in 20 Years! It is close to perfection as you're going to get in a release and this is definitely worth shouting to the roof-tops!
''A great quality vintage.'' Jancis Robinson
''Portugal’s Douro Valley 2011 vintage was exceptional.'' Dave McIntyre, Washington Post
''The 2011 reds exude freshness and minerality in spades. They're classic in their concentration of fruit and structure and modern in their elegant, pure expression of said fruit and structure. An outstanding vintage which produced powerfully concentrated wines of great structure and balance.'' Sarah Ahmed, The Wine Detective (UK)
''The Douro Valley is not only a stunningly beautiful viticultural region, but one which could be on the cusp of something very special.'' Lauren Eads, The Drinks Business Magazine
In regards to the flavour profile of this remarkable 2011 edition, I've sought out expect advice from one of the main editor's of Wine Enthusiast Magazine, Roger Voss, who has written so eloquently in his critically acclaimed review: “Assobio is from a single vineyard in Quinta dos Murcas. A powerful, structured expression of Douro wine, it has black fruits, dark tannins, some subtle layers of wood aging and great concentration. Dark and richly fruited.” 94 Points, Editor's Choice, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast Magazine
As for my thoughts I really believe with the blessing of time, 10 years to be exact, this has mellowed out significantly and expresses beautiful silkiness, fine structure, ripe dark fruits all in a graceful way. Made from the classical Douro blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinto Roriz. its best drinking window.... is now!
Note: We only have this available in 375ml bottles.... (and as Andrew Graham states this can be ideal for many people! "375ml bottles work out as just over one glass of wine per person, which really is the perfect amount for mid week drinking and ideal if you’re having a glass by yourself." Andrew Graham, Oz Wine Review
