Avignonesi Rosso di Montepulciano 2018

''A beautiful Rosso di Montepulciano with fresh cherry, orange-peel and floral character. It’s medium-bodied with fine, delicate tannins and a citrusy undertone at the finish.'' 92 Points, James Suckling

Hi Folks, Avignonesi is one of the oldest wineries in Italy. Like many historic estates, the origins of this emblematic winery parallel the movements of the Catholic Church. In 1377, when Pope Gregory XI moved the papal residence from Avignon, France back to Rome, one of the noble families who followed him to Italy eventually settled in Montepulciano, Tuscany and founded Avignonesi. (That's today's history lesson!) Along with its aristocratic roots, they also know how to make a divine red! The 2018 Avigonesi Rosso di Montepulciano is a serious contender for the best value Sangiovese in our entire store....   it opens with notes of raspberry, strawberry and blackberry that combine with aromas of sweet spices along with savoury, mineral and earthy tones  with a smooth tannic structure accompanied by good acidity. For us this is what Italian Sangiovese should taste like. However, it seems that we're not not the only ones that recognise the undoubted qualities emanating from the 2018 release, with our friends across the Atlantic singing from the same hymn sheet!

''Beautiful young garnet; aromas of morel and maraschino cherry. Medium-bodied, this is ripe and forward with good acidity, moderate tannins, and good persistence. Very good.'' Tom Hyland, Forbes.com

''Red-berry, baking-spice and fragrant blue-flower aromas mingle together on this vibrant racy red. The palate evokes juicy sour cherry, strawberry and hints of baking spice while smooth tannins provide pliant support.'' Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast Magazine

''A pure expression of Sangiovese, the Avignonesi is a delicately nuanced expression that focuses on wild cherry and forest berry. This is a Tuscan red that is defined by its precision and focus. This is how Sangiovese smells. Those wild berry aromas are followed by lilac and violet. The finish is compact and followed up with friendly acidity.'' Wine Advocate Magazine

''Tuscan producers can pleased with the 2018 vintage with silkiness, elegance and some surprising freshness on offer.'' Jancis Robinson
