Avignonesi Rosso di Montepulciano 2020

'''Notes of ripe red berries, licorice, cocoa and bark. Ripe but fresh with medium body and fine tannins. Juicy and fruit-forward. Vivid and delicious.'' 91 Points, James Suckling

Hi Folks, Avignonesi is one of the oldest wineries in Italy. Like many historic estates, the origins of this emblematic winery parallel the movements of the Catholic Church. In 1377, when Pope Gregory XI moved the papal residence from Avignon, France back to Rome, one of the noble families who followed him to Italy eventually settled in Montepulciano, Tuscany and founded Avignonesi. (That's today's history lesson!) Along with its aristocratic roots, they also know how to make a divine red! The Avigonesi Rosso di Montepulciano opens with notes of raspberry, strawberry and blackberry that combine with aromas of sweet spices along with savoury, mineral and earthy tones with a smooth tannic structure accompanied by good acidity. For us this is what Italian Sangiovese should taste like. However, it seems that we're not not the only ones that recognise the undoubted qualities emanating from the Avignonesi Rosso di Montepulciano, with our friends across the Atlantic singing from the same hymn sheet!

''A pure expression of Sangiovese, the Avignonesi is a delicately nuanced expression that focuses on wild cherry and forest berry. This is a Tuscan red that is defined by its precision and focus.'' Wine Advocate Magazine
