Hi Folks, The team at European Wine Store have always kept a close eye on the cool climate quality Pinot Grigio being produced in the mountainous landscape of the spectacular Trentino-Alto Adige region of Northern Italy. Indeed in the recent past we have had the privilege of travelling throughout the region and have maintained a fondness and respect for its traditions and none more so than for its unique white wine! To this day, It is unequivocally a reference point for the varietal with its minerally rich diverse terroir taking Pinot Grigio to a higher plane of quality than it has ever been before. One of the wineries at the heart of this transformation is St Michael Eppan whose Pinot Grigio continues to bring more acclaim and prestige to the region and along with it many new fans who in recent times have experienced the sensations on offer from this stunning atmospheric part of the world.
''This generous Pinot Grigio is brimming with lemons and yellow apples and has bright acidity that enables it to carry the fullish body effortlessly. Long cool finish.'' James Suckling
''It's all about sharpness and focus here, the exact qualities you look for in wines from this altitude and the reflective light of the snow-capped Italian Dolomites. Luminous and bright, with lasting zest and appeal. The variety performs with almost spicy intensity, showing grapefruit, crushed stone and bitter almond.'' Wine Advocate Magazine
''Peach, apple and pear aromas and flavours. Hints of spice on the palate, creamy texture and a long perfumed delicate finish.'' Decanter Magazine
For those unfamiliar with the style of Trentino-Alto Adige wines, the much travelled wine writer Tom Hyland of Forbes Magazine has put together a very accurate portrayal of the fine nuances on show.
''Thanks to its cool northerly location and climate; combined with cold mountain winds, produces wines of expressive aromatics, lively acidity and notable structure. All of this means highly complex wines, that while lovely upon release, are capable of aging and improving for several years in the bottle.'' Tom Hyland, Forbes.com
As for my take on today's featured Pinot Grigio, I really like the rich fruit aromas of pear, apple, citrus; with floral and distinct mineral nuances. It is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, good structure and leaves a long smooth finish. When it comes to Northern Italian Pinot Grigio you can't go past St Michael Eppan in terms of consistent brilliance.
